Miyajima's Living Miracles Misen's Seven Wonders
Mysterious legends are left in Mt. Misen where God dwells in.
Don't you go to look for seven wonders that introduce me?
1:Kiezu-no-hi (The eternal flame)
The holy fire which Kobo Daishi who founded Daishoin Temple in 806 used is burning even now. It is said that the holy water boiled by this fire works for all sorts of disease. It was also used as the pilot light for the “Flame of Peace” of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

2:Shakujo-no-Ume (Plum of crosier)
It is a double Japanese apricot with red blossoms and stands near the Misenhondo hall. The crosier that Kobo Daishi rested in is said to have made roots and changed into a big Japanese Ume apricot tree. Beautiful flowers bloom every year, but it is said that they don't bloom in case of unfortunate symptom in the mountain.

3:Mandara-iwa
If you go down backside of Misenhondo Hall a little, you can see a gigantic bedrock face equivalent in size to a couple dozen tatami mats.
Handwritten letters, Sanskrit characters and illustrations of Kobo Daishi engraved on it. Because big trees fell down by a typhoon, the way is closed and you can't enter this area now.

4:Kanman-iwa (Ebb-and-flow rock)
As the name implies, water level of the hollow opened on the side of rocks changes according to the come and go of the tide.
But the hollow of this rock is about 500 meters above the sea, furthermore salt is included in the water. It is not proved scientifically and it is one of the seven wonders.

5:Sound of wooden clappers
Clink, clink! The sound of beating clappers coming from nowhere of midnight darkness. Legend has it that the Tengu (a long-nosed goblin) living in Mt. Misen does it and is greatly scared by residents since it could bring curses unless one is staying indoors during clinking.
6:Shigure-zakura (Showered cherry blossoms)
A curious cherry tree moist with dew on any fine day, as if there has been a passing shower. Some say the strange phenomenon was reported already in “Miyajima Pictures” published in Edo Period. Unfortunately the tree was cut down and can't be seen.
7:Ryuto-no-sugi (Sea-fire Japan cedar)
The mysterious lights appear off the coast of Miyajima on the night of the lunar New Year were called “Ryuto” (the Sea-fire).
The great cedar on the Mt. Misen summit from which the Sea-fire can be seen was called “Ryuto-no-sugi”. The cedar is dead and can't be seen.
