Wonder of Nature Strange RocksImage
Objects creating the landscape seen only in Misen
They are Misen Primeval Forest, historical sites associated with Kobo Daishi, and “strange rocks.”
These rocks were created through the weathering of granite or the main geographic condition of Misen, featuring the strange spectacles formed by plethora of strange rocks; which are believed to constitute the basis for the mountain worships.
In the summit area, you will find a spacious open space surrounded by the rocks and stones of various sizes.
This point commands far-off the Shikoku and Kyushu mountain ranges, and near-by the beauty of Seto studded with islands of all sizes. You can tell natural scenic beauty and miracle of landscapes only after standing on the summit of Misen.
Kuguri-iwa (Duck-under Rock) Kujira-iwa (Whale Rock) Funa-iwa (Ship Rock)

After passing through this gigantic rock tunnel, commonly known as “Kuguri-iwa,” you will be only a step away to the Misen summit. They say its height has been lowered gradually due to the earthquakes of the recent years.   You will find a narrow pathway when finishing the last step of the stone stairway upward, after passing through the site of Nioumon-ato at the fork point of Daishoin Temple course. The rock on the right-hand side is known as the “Whale rock” because it resembles the head of a whale.   Situated directly below the kanman-iwa (Ebb-and-flow rock), one of the seven wonders, this particular rock is known as “Ship roc” for its huge bulk resembling a ship. A statue of Jizo is placed under the rock.

Kaisen-iwa(Scabies Rock) Stone Pavement of Prostitutes Maku-iwa (Curtain Rock)

A great rock located just above Dainichido Hall. It is said that an imprudent person catches a skin disease when he passes the rock, and that the scabies patient is cured when he touches the rock because it takes his disease off.   The flat stone pavement extending as long as 180 meters. The repair of the entrance path to the shrine was completed thanks to the donation of the prostitutes at the end of the Edo era.   An immense monolithic stone exposing from the bare mountain side, constituting one of the glorious view representing Misen. Believe it or not, it measures over 150 meters.
